As LED lighting continues to gain a greater market share in households and offices across the U.S., the technology is making inroads into other industries that also rely heavily on lighting.
According to LEDInside, LED grow lighting applications are considered to have the potential to be widely used in larger markets. These may include the medical, health and biology fields.
Multinational companies with sufficient sources of funding generally have a good hold on the LED grow lighting industry. Some of the companies with the resources to make these applications include Lumigrow and Hubbell Lighting.
The market, however, is ripe for other organizations to enter, including those involved with traditional lighting technologies.
Some companies involved with LED grow lights are developing products that highlight just how worthwhile investing in grow lights could be for horticulture, indoor gardening and food production.
Combining Lighting and Software
Lumigrow, Inc. is taking a unique approach to grow lighting. Instead of developing a simple grow light, the company is making it easier for buyers to use LED lighting with advanced software.
Known as SmartPAR, Lumigrow’s control platform lets researchers and growers schedule light levels and wavelength spectra. According to the company, users benefit from larger crop yields, energy savings and far greater control over grow cycles.
The program itself works with other LED fixtures and controls red, blue and white spectral ranges. Users then have the capability of creating multiple lighting zones, and the software’s flexibility and ease of use means going from grow mode to view-mode is as easy as flipping a switch.
The company also offers strip lights and fixtures that will improve grow rooms and reduce energy consumption.
In fact, Lumigrow claims that users can expect an energy usage reduction of up to 70 percent.
Horticulture Lighting
Hubbell Industrial Lighting is also developing effective ways to increase crop yield. Their product, known as NutriLED, emits an ideal mix of red and blue wavelengths for favorable chlorophyll absorption. Essentially, the lighting is suitable for any type of horticulture environment.
According to an official product description from Hubbell, NutriLED lighting can result in energy savings of up to 88 percent.
Other Developments
Elsewhere, international corporations are helping spur grow lighting development and usage. As LEDInside stated, Philips has long been a market leader when it comes to LED lighting and developing new applications.
Philips has pushed LED lighting worldwide and their market contribution cannot go unnoticed.
GE is another company that has pushed LED technology on a global level. It helps that the company is the main supplier of grow lights to China, but even so, GE has a robust research and development department that is actively developing new general lighting applications.
The corporation has high market recognition, and with the launch of horticulture lighting products, GE has also increased its market competitiveness.
LED grow lights are quickly becoming the next area of focus for many manufacturers large and small. These lights represent an ideal method that allows growers to produce higher yields while reducing energy consumption.
