Border States

beam ceremonyOn March 28, Border States held a “topping out” ceremony at our new Branch Support Center in Fargo, ND, in observance of the last steel beam being placed on the structure.

The beam, donning the signatures of multiple employee-owners, was topped with a miniature tree and attached to an American flag. The tree signified construction has reached the sky without injury or loss of life, and the flag was a reminder that Border States is an American employee-owned company.

Tammy Miller, Border States CEO, spoke to a group of employee-owners, Mortenson Construction staff and contractors during the event, acknowledging a job well done.

“This is a very exciting day for me, and for all the employee-owners at Border States,” Miller said. “We’re proud to be working for a 100 percent employee-owned American company, and we’re looking forward to moving into this facility in spring 2019.”

The $45 million building is located at 3801 26th Ave. S in Fargo, ND, near the intersection of Interstate 29 and Interstate 94. Here are some interesting stats related to the project:

  • Border States broke ground on the three-story, 120,000-square-foot facility Aug. 24, 2017.
  • Over 30,000 construction hours have been worked without a recordable injury.
  • More than 1,900 cubic yards (or 200 truckloads) of concrete have been poured.
  • Over 3,000 pieces of steel weighing 501 tons have been set.

The new Branch Support Center will replace the existing corporate office, bringing approximately 400 employee-owners scattered across three locations into one building. These professionals help support more than 100 branch locations across the country.

The Border States design team weighed needs with their budget, maximizing every dollar spent to create a workplace that will enhance collaboration and productivity, portray the company brand, and enhance recruiting. The building will have room for growth to 540 employees, and the site has space for a second building.
