According to a white paper from Cisco, companies are now outfitting office spaces with digital technology to help gain a competitive advantage. But the IoT doesn’t only encompass smart devices and computers. As noted by James Neeley of Superior Essex, the IoT is the creation and maintenance of an integrated network of smart grids. Within these grids are connected devices such as security cameras, Wi-Fi access points and LED lighting. The connected devices and building functions have given way to a term known as the digital ceiling, and Cisco stated it is the next frontier in the IoT. By making buildings smarter and expanding the digital ceiling, companies can increase efficiency and user experience while reducing energy usage. Due to the sheer amount of systems needing to be connected to a single IP network, building managers and those in charge of digital technology will want to ensure they correctly set up their digital ceiling. The Digital Ceiling A digital ceiling that connects all devices and functions such as lighting and HVAC means everything is secure and readily available to control. These devices then allow office occupants to create a work environment unrivaled by anything else. Additionally, the digital ceiling can be controlled to create a customized experience. High-ranking executives can realistically set the temperature of their office to one level, while other employees can control the settings on their own. Cisco stated the fastest way to create an office digital ceiling is to utilize a building’s lighting network simply because lights are located within every part of the building and typically close together. Lights can therefore act as a central hub for various office functions by adding sensors that could control a wide range of functions such as temperature, Bluetooth low energy and visual light communication, among others. Why the Digital Ceiling Matters Offices are increasingly one large digital connection. A digital ceiling can help companies lower energy costs, create better and more comfortable working environments and streamline maintenance because all of the building’s spaces are connected to one platform.
