MELTRIC Switch-Rated Plugs and Receptacles – Better, faster, safer

Safety switches are essential when working with manufacturing equipment and heavy machinery, especially for repairs, maintenance and emergency stoppage. According to the National Electrical Code (NEC), a safety switch must be placed in sight and no more than 50 feet from the equipment it controls. MELTRIC Switch-Rated plugs and receptacles provide a better, faster and safer NEC approved disconnect switch alternative directly at the source.

MELTRIC Switch-Rated plugs and receptacles are easily configured. They can be installed in-line, panel-mounted, wall-mounted or motor-mounted. This ensures you have your line of sight disconnect exactly where it is needed. You can easily disconnect and lock out machines, clearly indicating the electrical connection has been broken and the equipment is safe to repair.

MELTRIC Switch-Rated plugs and receptacles are built to perform in even the harshest of environments. Each device has a dead-front design, ensuring users are not exposed to live parts or arcing. To disconnect the circuit, users simply press the pawl to break the circuit. The enclosed arc chamber eliminates arc hazards found with traditional pin and sleeve twist-type devices. Before the plug can be removed, all contacts are de-energized within the enclosed chamber. Once the connection is broken, the device is turned 30 degrees to engage safety shutters over each receptable contact, removing exposure to live parts or arcing.

MELTRIC Switch-Rated plugs and receptacles can simplify maintenance of your machines. With machines hooked to a switch, an electrician may be needed to disconnect and reconnect machinery. With MELTRIC devices, you can train your personnel to safely make and break electrical connections, reducing the need for electricians.

MELTRIC shared an example of the efficiency the Switch-Rated plugs and receptacles can provide.  During construction of a wastewater treatment plant, the submersible pumps were hard-wired in. Shortly into construction, one of the pumps needed to be replaced. An electrician had to be called in to unwire/rewire the plug. With all the downtime spent disconnecting and reconnecting the device, it took crews nearly a day to complete the maintenance. Following this incident, they decided to replace all hard-wired connections with MELTRIC Switch-Rated plugs and receptacles, allowing personnel to safely connect and disconnect equipment without a licensed electrician. Disconnecting, conducting maintenance and reconnecting the pump took nearly a day to complete. Most of this time was spent disconnecting and reconnecting the pump.

MELTRIC Switch-Rated plugs and receptacles also provided efficiency for traffic light repairs in Montreal. The City of Montreal was experiencing a delay in repairs of lights damaged by accidents. Before crews could perform maintenance on the lights, the electric utility had to be called to disconnect the lights. As a high-traffic, urban area, working traffic lights are essential. With the installation of MELTRIC Switch-Rated plugs and receptacles between the utility’s power line and the traffic light’s electrical control box, the city could train their crews to safely break the connection – without having to call the utility.

MELTRIC Switch-Rated plugs offer a variety of models supporting a range of amperage (20-200) and up to 600 volts. Contact one of locations nearest you to learn more.
