Shawn Burgad became a Border States Warehouse Associate 21 years ago, thinking he was walking into a job – not a career.
“My career soon found me, and I’m really glad it did,” Burgad says.
For the past five years Burgad has been based out of his hometown of Bismarck, ND, serving as Strategic Account Manager for Border States’ Northwest Region. It’s a position that allows him to serve specific accounts across a group of our more than 100 branch locations.

Before accepting his current position in North Dakota, Burgad worked in multiple locations across Border States’ vast footprint to learn as much as he could about the company’s market segments. Much of his journey was mapped out by a helpful former supervisor, to whom Burgad attributes much of his success.
Through his experience, Burgad advanced within the company.
“Each time you work in a new area and learn more about that area, your supervisor provides valuable coaching and mentoring,” Burgad says. “All you have to do is show that you want more knowledge and experience.”
Our work culture is positive
Border States fosters a work culture of care and support. The company has implemented various mechanisms, such our one-of-a-kind intranet site “Borderline,” that help employee-owners share information like safety best practices and ideas for company growth. Everyone has a voice.
“The Border States culture is one of our biggest assets,” Burgad says. “We’re a work family that’s driven to make decisions as a team.”
Burgad witnessed some of this growth in 2017 when Border States opened a new Bismarck branch location. Employee-owners from across the country flooded to Bismarck to help prepare the branch for its grand opening.
“During these branch moves, employee-owners from other locations put their personal lives aside to help out their team members. Everybody – from warehouse positions to upper management positions – works side-by-side,” Burgad says. “It’s incredible.”

Border States had 13 branches when Burgad joined the company. With more than 100 branch locations across the U.S. today, there are many job opportunities available.
“Whatever you’re going to school for today, there are many roles that Border States values and is seeking,” Burgad says. “We utilize everything from warehousing, to sales, to accounting, to media and more – it’s a very exciting time to start your career here.”
Experience work-life balance
Border States knows it’s important to have a life outside of work.
“The work-life balance Border States provides for my family and I has been great,” Burgad says. “The company is very supportive when you need to take time off.”
When he’s off the clock, Burgad enjoys outdoor activities, especially camping, fishing, water sports and mountain snowmobiling. He’s also restoring a ’69 Dodge Charger with his son.
Burgad believes quality time with family is important, especially when it comes to volunteering in their local community and beyond. Border States makes it easy for employee-owners to give back.
