Linemen work with thousands of volts of electricity, keeping the power flowing to our homes and businesses each and every day. They spend their days in all types of conditions, from extreme heat to sleet and snow, and from hot dry pavement to wet and slippery mud. It’s a dangerous profession, making it critical to follow the safety rules.
Training courses and daily briefings are methods used to help linemen remain vigilant in paying attention to the seemingly small things and avoiding shortcuts so they can finish safely and go home at the end of each day.
Taking a different angle from the typical safety training or briefing is Dennis McDade, lineman for Dominion Virginia Power. He wanted to add some fun and “cool” to safety training and created a music video called “Safety Rap.” It’s gotten more than 300,000 views on YouTube since he posted it in 2009. Plus, he and his crew have been called on to perform their safety rap at national industry events.
At Border States Electric, safety is not just a priority, it is a value.
