With a continued focus on safety at Border States, we here at the Lubbock branch hosted our first defensive driving course. Delivering to and servicing our customers out in the field is such a big part of what we do. It is critical that we provide our employee-owners with the right tools and resources to make safe choices. This course was a great opportunity to do just that.
We had 20 drivers from five different branches: Abilene, Big Spring, Lubbock and San Angelo, Texas; as well as Hobbs, New Mexico. Steve Dixon, Corporate Operations Specialist – Fleet Safety, provided the training. The subjects covered included Driving Defensively in Our Roadway Community, Fatal Four Driving Behaviors, Conditions in our Roadway Community, Distracted and Impaired Driving, and Pre- and Post-trip Inspections. Overall, our drivers walked away with a realization of how much responsibility they have when it comes to being a professional driver.
One of the drivers who attended had this to say about the training: “The course really gave you a reality check of the responsibility you are taking when you get behind the wheel and that it is not just about you and the company, but it is your responsibility for everyone on the road that you are on. So think as if every vehicle is being driven by your own loved one. You think twice about everything you do, including taking responsibility for making sure your equipment is operating safely before you take it out on the highway.”
A special thanks to Steve for taking the time to travel down from our corporate headquarters in Fargo, ND, to support our safety needs. Also a big thank you to the branches that were able to participate in the training. It was great to have our team come together and share their experiences as professional drivers for Border States. We look forward to making this a regular event for our driving staff.
