Before joining Border States nearly four years ago, Kyle Schmidt was in the business of building ethanol plants, power plants, wind turbines and other industrial structures.

The blueprints were always different, but his priority remained the same – keep people safe.

Schmidt’s passion for safety is just one attribute that makes him a great fit for the role of Border States Safety Market Specialist. With his wife and 8-month-old son at home, the Rockford, MN, native understands the importance of providing the right products and services needed to get everyone home safely to their families at the end of the day.

“The more we can show people we care about their safety, the better,” Schmidt says. “Being able to know and understand the best safety product applications really makes a difference in how we serve our customers.”

Your insight is appreciated

As an employee-owner, Schmidt feels like his voice is heard within the company.

“Being an employee-owner means the decisions I make affect our business. I can decide to bring in new products to sell, growing our business,” he says. “Being an employee-owner also means I can go to my co-workers and ask for help without feeling hesitant.”

Schmidt appreciates that employee-owners are always collaborating across departments to make the company better.

Enjoy work-life balance

In his free time, Schmidt enjoys spending time with his family. He also loves the outdoors – especially hunting, fishing, camping and snowmobiling. Most people don’t know Schmidt is an Eagle Scout.

“Border States has been great when it comes to having work-life balance, especially when it comes to spending time with family,” he says.

Community volunteering with co-workers

Like many employee-owners at Border States, Schmidt loves that the company provides numerous volunteer opportunities.

“Giving back to the community is a huge part of being an employee-owner, and Border States has made it possible for me to serve through organizations like United Way and Habitat for Humanity,” he says. “It means a lot to me because our communities support us.”
